One of the goals of a new Wyandotte Jaycees scholarship is to create something positive from what can only be described as the tragic loss of a young life. The Caleb M. Diem Earth’s Great Treasure Memorial Scholarship seeks to highlight teen suicide prevention. The Jaycees are awarding the scholarship to a 2020 Roosevelt High School graduate.

Members of the Wyandotte Jaycees began the new year feeling confident about the organization’s future, hoping to build on a successful 2019. Among those successes was the annual Beautiful Baby Contest, which has been going on for many years during the annual Wyandotte Street Art Fair.

As 2018 comes to a close, members of the Wyandotte Jaycees are basking in the glow of honors and accolades the organization has received throughout the year. Over the past few years, the bar has been set high for the local Jaycees chapter and their presidents. According to Elizabeth Mullins, a past president, peers have consistently rated the Wyandotte Jaycees as one of the best chapters in the state.

Wyandotte Jaycees’ Purgatory Haunted House promises to delight, disturb

Just as the Christmas season is marked by visits to Santa Claus, many people can’t get into the Halloween season without a visit to a local haunted house attraction. In the Downriver area, the king of haunted houses belongs to the Wyandotte Jaycees. The fundraiser has been a mainstay of the organization since its inception in 1976.

Wyandotte Jaycees join nonprofit group to honor fallen soldiers, raise funds for VFW posts

The Wyandotte Jaycees are teaming up with Running to Honor, a nonprofit group founded by Aaron Bartal, in sponsoring a special 5K event July 27 at Heritage Park in Taylor. Bartal said he founded Running to Honor as a way to memorialize fallen soldiers he served with while in Iraq. Begun in 2015, the organization’s scope has widened to include service members who died as a result of war-related injuries, and also recognizes those who lost their personal battle with PTSD.

Wyandotte Jaycees host free spaghetti dinner for Downriver seniors

If you’re a Downriver senior citizen who enjoys a good spaghetti dinner and the fellowship of others, the Wyandotte Jaycees got you covered. The Jaycees are extending an invitation to join them for the group’s annual free spaghetti dinner for those over the age of 55, who reside in the Downriver area. The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. March 31 at the Copeland Center, 2306 Fourth St.

Wyandotte Jaycees to host April 11 public forum on human trafficking

Downriver residents are invited to a free public forum to discuss human trafficking. The meeting will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 11 at Bacon Memorial District Library, 45 Vinewood, Wyandotte. “This has become an issue in our community and we want to educate all our citizens,” said Michelle Kelley, community vice president with the Wyandotte Jaycees. Kenitha Pearson, CEO and founder of Warrior Women on a Mission!, will speak about all levels of human trafficking.

Wyandotte Jaycees celebrate 41 years of scares with opening of Kindred Haunted House

More than four decades have passed since the Wyandotte Jaycees first introduced the Downriver community to homegrown horror. That legacy continues with the opening this weekend of Kindred Haunted House, the story of a twisted, backwoods cannibalistic family. “The Wyandotte Jaycees Haunted House is a fundraising tradition that goes back to 1976,” said Shaun Abshire, 42nd chapter president. “Our attractions are the product of thousands of hours of diligent planning, construction, haunting and cleanup.”

Families gather in Bishop Park for annual Wyandotte Jaycees Easter Egg Hunt

Hundreds of families joined together in Bishop Park on Saturday to take part in the Wyandotte Jaycees 2017 Easter Egg Hunt. With more than 6,000 candy-filled eggs scattered throughout the park this year, every child was able to leave this year's event with a smiling face and some candy in hand. Other activities this year included a bounce house, face painting, balloon animals and pictures with the Easter bunny.
